Personal Profile

Hello, my name is Ben Small and i’m an industrial pharmacologist (for want of a better categorisation).  Having  spent sometime working across all the major phases of early pharmaceutical  discovery and development (i.e. discovery, clinical pharmacokinetics and safety) for two blue-chip pharma companies I believe I’ve been given a unique perspective on the functioning of this industry and the valuable contribution it makes to the UK economy.

My legacy experience has shaped my research ambition which is to provide a quantiative and mechanistic definition of drug efficacy at the in vitro (cellular) level in the first instance.  If the fact that we don’t have a mechanistic definition of drug efficacy doesn’t suprise you, then I would ask you to consider the fact that most drugs fail in the clinic precisely because of their inherent lack of efficacy.

This blog is written as a reflection on my thoughts regarding systems pharmacology and philosophy inter alia.

This is a personal weblog. The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer.  In addition, my thoughts and opinions change from time to time…I consider this a necessary consequence of having an open mind. This weblog is intended to provide a semi-permanent point in time snapshot and manifestation of the various memes running around my brain, and as such any thoughts and opinions expressed within out-of-date posts may not the same, nor even similar, to those I may hold today.
